Career profile
Candice started her career as a commercial attorney in 1996 with Burt Meaden Attorneys in Johannesburg. Two years later she moved to a law firm in London, and it was there that she was first introduced to plain legal language. This ‘new’ approach to legal writing planted the seeds for a career in simplifying complex legal information.
Lawyer and plain language practitioner
In 2001, Candice returned to South Africa and rejoined Burt Meaden Attorneys, this time as a director. She also established Plain Language Communications (Pty) Ltd, a consultancy focused on implementing plain language initiatives in organisations.
Candice has consulted with leading companies in South Africa, including Liberty Life, Hollard, First Rand Group Limited, Finance Week, Ernst & Young, the Bond Exchange of South Africa, Deutsche Bank, and various government departments.
Candice is the South African representative of Clarity, an international association of lawyers who promote plain legal language.
Passionate about training
Candice has trained well over 100 courses in plain language writing for these and many other organisations. Training is Candice’s passion and she believes there will be greater commitment to sustaining initiatives if organisations can gain internal expertise.
With an enduring interest in education, Candice sits on the debating committee for the South African Council for English Education, and she lectured in Advanced Communication Skills for the University of Johannesburg in 2005. She is currently co-authoring a book for legal practitioners on Trusts in South Africa.
